There's a difference between what is truly antique and what is simply old. The true antique begins with a value based on its origin--where or when or by whom it was made, for instance, or from what material. It's also generally somewhat rare, so even mass-produced items can be classed as antiques. Then it's lasted through the years without major damage and in its original condition.

Considering that most of these things are household items like furniture and dishes that are used on a daily basis and passed down through generations of family, it's a wonder that they come out the other end in one piece.

People often collect antiques for investment value, but the pursuit and purchase often goes beyond the simple investment interest, and most antique collectors have a soft spot for a certain era or style, such as Art Deco or Mission.
